The Album
The album "Forgotten Rose" explores further my personal impression of what constitutes a gothic nature. Whether or not this relates to the common definition of gothic, I have no idea. But for me, "gothic" implies a dark and/or spiritual theme. Not always the latter, but very often the former.
Suffer in Silence
This song is simply about those who suffer in silence, whether by choice or by circumstance. It's not the most original or complex song that I've ever written, but I think it sets a nice enough opening for the album, highlighting the aspects of pain and suffering in life.
Dark Infinity
I feel somewhat nostalgic with this instrumental. My aim was to reproduce something along the same vein as the first two instrumentals from The Mellow Sovereign EP and originally I ended up producing something far too similar to Silent Sorrow. Initially feeling like I'd run out of ideas, I suddenly decided to interlace the piano parts with some melodies in the strings section. My aim was to try and write a piece that was somewhat dark and atmospheric; I think I've succeeded.
Empty Dream
I was initially unsure about what to write for this song. Then, at some point or another, I came across an old note that I'd written for myself back when I was still writing lyrics for the Gothic Dream album. It was the six-line verse at the end of this song, only the "empty dream" bit was originally "gothic dream", which I'd originally intended to use in the song, Gothic Dream. When I wrote that song, however, I'd forgotten all about that little piece. When I re-discovered it, as I was bereft of other ideas at the time, I decided to re-use it for Empty Dream.
Forgotten Rose
The title song of the album. For me, this song highlights one of the stronger aspects of my interpretation of the gothic theme, i.e. loneliness. The song basically revolves around a rose which is planted alone in an otherwise barren field. The rose survives, but due to its environment does not have an easy time of it and is also unable to reproduce. As a result, the rose eventually dies lonely and forgotten.
Timeless Reality
Now and again in the past when I've felt depressed, it's occurred to me how everything is temporary, that nothing ever lasts, so on and so forth. While it's very rare that I write any of this music while I'm depressed (ironic as it may seem), I made a note to myself to write a song about this very fact of reality. And over some time, in a healthier state of mind, I wrote the lyrics for it.
Blood Triangle
Given that most of my songs start life by writing the title, rather than thinking of a concept first, some songs such as this one can be difficult to think of lyrics for. The title itself was thought up as an alternative to the phrase "Love Triangle" and eventually I decided on writing about a ritual human sacrifice, the blood triangle being a mark carved into the subject's chest before their soul is consumed by a demon.
Twin Souls
The idea for this song was originally inspired when I was listening to Kamelot - The Haunting (Somewhere in Time). I've always loved that song and I wanted to write a song of my own about two soul mates who search for eachother. Eventually I came up with the title Twin Souls and wrote a song which, I feel, explores the more romantic aspect of the theme within my music. I was unsure whether or not to give this song a happy ending, but ultimately decided against it for the sake of consistency.
A Lost Friend
This song was originally written on its own, prior to its inclusion on this album, as a song for a coworker who was leaving. Because of the quality of the song, I chose to modify the lyrics slightly and include it on this album under a different name. A video of the original song being performed can be found here on YouTube - Leaving Song
Phantasmal Chapel
This song is literally just about ghosts in a chapel. The protagonist of the song is walking through this chapel and can hear every last moan of the undead, souls who are earth-bound and trapped within the chapel. By the end of the song, the protagonist is so deeply affected by the suffering of the ghosts that she herself ceases to live, as her soul departs from her body to join the ranks of the undead.
Black Sunlight
This song is a fictional story about a man who unwittingly murders his lover during a schizophrenic episode, all the while he is unsure whether or not it was really him who committed the murder. He is haunted both by the death of his lover and the uncertainty of whether or not he really did kill her.
The Soul's Journey
A fitting epic and closer for the album, this song explores a more spiritual avenue of my theme by describing the journey of the soul on Earth, from the first experiences of the world at birth to the final stages of life where the soul prepares to once again depart from this world, travelling back up to the heavens from whence it came.
